1825  The House of Representatives elects John Quincy Adams president since no candidate received a majority of electorial votes.
1861  Jeff Davis and Alexander Stephans elected President and Vice President of the Confederate States of America.
1870  US Weather Bureau is established.

1955  Margaux Hemingway

1964  The Beatles made their first television appearance in the United States on the Ed Sullivan Show.
1981  Bill Haley dies of a heart attack in Harlingen, Texas.  His hit song in 1954 "Rock Around the Clock" has sold over 22 million copies to date.
