1778  Captain James Cook thought he discovered a group of islands and named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of the Earl of Sandwich.  Too bad the polynesians already named them Hawaii, later to become the 50th US Territory or state.
1886 A Field Hockey Association formed in England.
1896  X-Ray machine exhibited in New York City for the first time.
